Disparate materials pertaining to the service of William E. Kerns, a Richland Center, Wisconsin resident who served in Company G, 13th Infantry Regiment during the American Indian Wars. Included is a letter written to Kerns from a fellow veteran, a newspaper article about his service, and a photograph of Kerns in uniform. The letter was written in 1933 by George Campbell, a fellow veteran of Company G, who talks about other veterans and his life after the Army. The newspaper article (1980) provides a biographical sketch of Kerns provided by his son, Ray. Originally from New Jersey, Kerns enlisted in the Army and saw action during the Great Sioux War and the Apache Wars. Kerns married after his service of ten years and later settled in Richland Center. A transcription (2010) was provided by Hannah Bailey, a volunteer from the University of Wisconsin-Madison History Department.
